Welcome

Welcome to my blog for friends and family about my 45th Birthday Trip to Africa. I wanted to provide a space for anyone who was interested in the trip to follow as I plan and take this trip of a lifetime. I will occasionally be blogging before departure and will do so daily while I'm on the trip. Hope you enjoy!

Monday September 10 or Elation and Sadness

As I'm writing this on the same day, waking up this morning was quite sad.  I had a fantastic time at Thornybush and I honestly didn't want it to end.  As a solo traveler, things can be a bit funny as you either feel very isolated or part of a group.  I felt very much a part of the group.  At no point did I ever feel alone.  I did enjoy the "silence" being away from technology for a period of time.  It did my brain and psyche good to do so.

I originally didn't think that I was going to be able to partake in the game drive today, but my transfer to the airport was an hour after the normal completion time for the morning game drives.  Therefore, I made sure to pack up my luggage last night so that I wouldn't be rushing around like a chicken with my head cut off to get ready to leave.

This morning it was just the five of us on the drive.  I still had a fantastic time even though Frank and Tracey weren't there.  The four Cape Towners had been very friendly all along and continued to be so.  In fact, they had the staff at the lodge set a place at their table for me at breakfast after we returned from the drive.  They told me that they felt I shouldn't spend my last meal alone....

Here's some of the photos from today's drive where we spent a lot of time watching the wild dog pack.  Boy are those pups cute...

Can your neck do that?
It was back to the lodge after the drive.  I don't normally go for the tourist shots, but I had to get one of our guide and tracker plus the vehicle.

Shortly thereafter, it was on to the airport to head back to Johannesburg to pick up my independent itinerary.  As the plane took off, I felt a little bit of an empty pit as I knew I'd miss South Africa.  However, I've only scratched the surface and need to come back..
